Maggie Rogers just released her new single “Fallingwater” via Capitol Records. Just two years ago, Rogers was a student at New York University’s Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music, where her folk-electronica “Alaska” wowed Pharrell Williams in a video that then went viral, quickly intriguing hundreds of thousands of listeners. Now, “Fallingwater” is available for streaming on all platforms, a piece that falls nothing short of the lyrical and instrumental sophistication she has demonstrated since her launch into the industry.
Produced by Rostam Batmanglij and the singer herself, “Fallingwater” showcases Roger’s gift for conjuring earthly imagery to impart emotion. As heard in her debut EP “Now That The Light is Fading” (2017), her style is characterized by the personal experiences that make up her life -– her instrumental judgment mirroring the influence music played in her upbringing. “Fallingwater” amounts to nothing less: the rhythmic track is charged with a burgeoning pop-like chorus and strengthened by her slow-moving voice and lyrical input about change.
Maggie’s popularity is largely attributed to the vulnerability and rawness found in her lyrics and performance; listeners relate to her authentic storytelling method. In a handwritten note shared to Twitter, Rogers unveiled the story behind “Fallingwater.” She describes the new single as “a song that celebrates rapid change and how simultaneously scary and electric it can feel,” a universal experience that she shares through the instrumental variation and the mid-song tempo change. Rogers gives a translation of her observations and spiritual impressions to lyrics, carrying the elastic melody as does the video that followed its release. She sings, “I never loved you fully the way I could / I fought the current running just the way you would / And now I’m in the creek / And its getting harder / I’m like falling water.” The beginning of the song, fairly shy and soft, features Roger’s alluringly solitary voice against soft keys and drum loops, as the last half of the song is distinguished by clapping and layered harmonies. The result is a cascading story that prompts a fulfilled promise of change and resolution.
Rogers will be joining HAIM on a series of U.S., U.K. and European tour dates, and is also set to play numerous festivals including the U.K.’s Reading and Leeds festival and the Pilgrimage Music & Cultural Festival in September. Her upcoming tour is the first since her summer 2017 headline run, which sold out in minutes. Please visit https://www.maggierogers.com/live/ for the complete itinerary.
